Inside a large mansion, a man stood in apprehension, his butler by his side. “Are you certain this will work?” he asked his butler, not sounding very convinced of something.

“Why yes, sir. They guaranteed us that our problem will be resolved,” the butler nodded.

“Oh, I don’t doubt that THEY can do it. I’m wondering if SHE can do it,” the owner sighed as he looked at the source of his apprehension. Standing in front of the large painting in the room, was a girl of about 17 years of age. She had fiery red hair that was clipped upward to make it look like it spiked up at the back of her head, with eyes that were a deep crimson color. She was dressed in what looked like a slightly modified version of traditional Onmyoji robes and hakama pants, with a pair of simple shoes on her feet. The robes were colored white, yet the sleeves were notably shorter, only reaching to her elbows, and the sleeves themselves were a lot less baggy than normal. Likewise, her hakama pants were much less baggy, making them look more like long pants rather than hakamas. Last, but not least was the patch that had been sewn on to her shoulder, which read I.S.S.

The redhead for her part did her best to ignore him as she continued to chant under her breath...though that didn’t stop the small vein from appearing near her forehead. As she continued to chant, her body suddenly became enveloped in an aura of sorts, her sleeves actually blowing upward as if by wind from the ground. Suddenly her eyes snapped open, as she reached into her sleeve, and pulled out a paper talisman, and threw it at the painting in front of her. “Akuryo Taisan!” she declared, the charm glowing brightly, and from the painting a wispy form emerged.

The creature coalesced into a vaguely imp shaped figure that floated in the air. “Begone!” she commanded, as the charm glowed brightly again, the imp seemingly writhing in pain....before the charm burned up, and the imp looked just fine. The imp laughed, and to the astonished eyes of the onlookers it...manifested a chair and what looked like a drink, before laying back against it, sipping the drink and wearing sunglasses. The whole image SCREAMED ‘not taking her seriously’.

The moment she saw that, several veins appeared on the girl’s forehead, and before anyone, even the imp, could do anything, she had reached into her robe, and pulled out an M1911 handgun. “Begone, and STAY gone!” she practically roared, before emptying out a clip of bullets on the imp, japanese kanji of ‘Akuryo Taisan’ or ‘Evil Spirit Begone’ appearing where the bullets impacted, ripping right through the imp...and through the painting too. When the small hail storm ended, the owner and the butler were left gaping at the aftermath. Sure the evil spirit had been exorcised….but the girl had just destroyed the priceless painting in the process, evident by the bullet holes in the painting...and punctuated when it came off of its hanging spot, and fell to the ground.

“Er...so...job well done?” the girl asked, having the decency to AT LEAST look sheepish at what she had just done.

5 minute later had her finding herself unceremoniously kicked out of the mansion...literally.

“AND STAY OUT!!!” The owner roared as his butler dusted his hands off.

“Wait what about…” what she was about to say was promptly interrupted by the door slamming. “...the payment…?” she finished lamely, before sighing as she picked herself up and dusted herself off.

Sighing to herself, she trudged down the path, not really paying attention to where she was going. As such, she didn’t notice when a large form started to loom over her until she was literally covered in its shadow. Quickly turning around, she was just in time to see a large bear about to pounce on her...only for it to suddenly jerk its head down and fall to the ground, as though it had been struck...hard.

“Yo, Akari, how did the job go?” came the voice of a young man, sounding so casual, he might as well have been talking about the weather. The girl named Akari turned to the source, and saw a young man of about 19 years with deep blue eyes, and silverish white hair that was short yet spiked a bit around the back of his head. He was dressed in a simple shirt and jeans. He had a leather jacket over his shirt, and a pair of black shoes on his feet. Like her, he had a patch sewn on his shoulder which read I.S.S.

She regarded him for a moment, idly noticing the fact that he had no doubt elbowed the bear on its head hard enough to knock it out cold, before huffing at being reminded of the recent fiasco. “Shut up. Let’s just get back to base,” she said tersely.

“Ah...I see,” he sighed as he followed after her. “You know, Boss isn’t gonna be happy about this,” he commented as he scratched the back of his head.

“...says the guy who didn’t do anything,” Akari grumbled.

The man chuckled at that, before countering, “Says the girl who asked me to stay out of the way,” he teased, much to her annoyance.

“Just be quiet, Ginji,” she muttered under her breath as they trudged on.

Later, after making it to the nearby town, they made their way to a local restaurant. When they passed the bar, they both spared a quick glance at the bartender who nodded and gestured with his eyes to the side. Following it, they walked down a hallway, and passed a door that had an ‘out of order’ sign on it. Ginji reached into his jacket, and pulled out an ID card, and held it up to the Out of Order sign. A quick flash emanated from the sign, and the wall next to the door opened up, to which they walked in, the wall resealing itself shortly after. Walking a little further, they came upon a large mirror at the end of the hall. Standing before it, they breathed on the mirror, before placing their palms on the spot where they breathed. A flash of red appeared under their palms, and the mirror suddenly rippled, and the two promptly fell through it.

When they opened their eyes, they were treated to the sight of a vast futuristic looking complex, as various members from various different races were milling about, getting mission applications, doing regular maintenance, and even a few janitors on duty. As the two walked through the base, a few of the staff and other operatives offered them a few waves of greeting to which they returned...though the few that got a look at Akari’s face when she wasn’t waving back...they decided to get out of the way, since her temper was legendary around here.

Shortly after, they made it to an office that overlooked the entire complex. Taking a seat outside the door, they waited for when it was their turn to come in. That came when a blond man in his mid twenties came out of the office. His hair was cut short and kept neat, while his outfit consisted of a full set of plate mail armor that covered his torso, shoulders, waist, and legs, giving him the appearance of a european knight.

“Ah! Will-sempai!” Akari smiled.

“Hey, Will,” Ginji nodded. “So...I guess Boss will see us now?”

“Yeah, he said you can come in now,” Will nodded, before sighing and adding, “And Akari, you really need to work on that temper of yours. This is the third one this month…”

“But I…” Akari was about to say, before Ginji put his hand on her shoulder.

“Come on, partner. Let’s not keep the boss waiting,” he said with a reassuring smile.

A few minutes later…

“I see, so the client declined the contract,” the man said in a level tone, not once turning to face them.

“Yeah, totally unfair right? I mean, I DID get rid of the evil spirit and all that,” Akari said, though she was starting to sweat as she did. By her side, Ginji leveled a deadpan stare at her, while across from them, next to the man sitting at the table with his back turned, Will sighed.

“Yes, it would have been unfair…” Boss seemed to nod before turning around in his chair, revealing him to be a man seemingly in his mid thirties with gray hair that was short and spiky, and dressed in a black 3 piece suit. “If only you hadn’t destroyed the painting along with the spirit!” he shouted as he slammed his hands into the table, making a dent in it as he got up.

Akari recoiled when he did that, and was soon shaking when Boss leveled a glare at her for a few moments. After what felt like an eternity, Boss sighed and sat back down. “What are we going to do with you, Akari?” he sighed. “I can’t have you botching a mission every time something sets off your hair trigger temper. Heck, the fact that Ginji hasn’t asked for a change in partners is a miracle already...and one that’s really kept you out of the fire,” he sighed again. “I’m afraid you leave me no choice.”

“W-what?” Akari gulped.

“Akari Hinomori, you are hereby under probation till further notice. Within that time, you will be taking missions as normal. However, if you ever, even once botch up a mission thanks to your temper again, you will be demoted immediately to Rank 1, and reassigned to a desk job,” Boss stated.

Outside, the entire complex was shaken by a blood curdling scream of “Nooooooo!!!!”

Back inside the office, all the inhabitants were thinking the same thing. “Good lord! Is she part Banshee or something?!”

“Either way, my decision is final. You have talent, Akari, just like your father. But I can’t waste our resources and credibility for each time you decide to blow up on something,” Boss stated with finality.

“Yes sir…” Akari sighed dejectedly as she, Ginji, and Will got out of the office.

“Well...that could have been worse,” Will said, trying to lighten the mood.

“How?” Ginji deadpanned, still trying to get his hearing back on properly.

“Well...not that long ago, Boss would have demoted her without probation. But since she got you as her partner, he’s gotten some of his hope for her back,” Will smiled. “You know, you two make a great team, even if you don’t realize it,” he smiled once more before walking away to another part of the complex.

“Will-sempai?” Akari tilted her head to the side curiously, wondering what he meant by that.

(POV change: Akari’s POV)

I’m guessing you’re all wondering what’s going on by now, right? Well, to start with, I’m Akari. Akari Hinomori, Onmyoji in training, and an agent of ISS, International Strategic Securities. What that is...I’ll get to it later. The casual guy here is my partner, Ginji, and yes no family name included considering he doesn’t have a clue who he is or where he came from. Now, long story short, ISS accepts jobs from...a VERY wide range. ISS is an organization that deals with all sort of both supernatural and extraterrestrial occurrence. Of course, ISS itself doesn’t officially exist outside of a front we use, a front that provides security for those who hires us with the right amount of cash. Few people know of the true face of ISS. The world government needs something done regarding the unknown? We are their first go-to in that situation. We take contracts from them and civvies who are willing to keep their lips shut about us. Its members consist of a large variety of species, and I’m among one of that many species, a human practitioner of Onmyodo. Humans aren’t the only ones we have in ISS, mind you, we have/had members consisting of plenty of races most would consider ‘fictional’. We’ve had werewolves, elves, vampires, gremlins, you name it, we probably either have it or had it at one point or another.

Now, where was I? Oh yeah, as you probably saw, I just got a real verbal lashing from our boss...er...Boss. Yeah, I’m not kidding, we don’t know his real name, and everyone just calls him Boss. Don’t get me wrong, Boss is a real swell guy, especially since he keeps putting up with me and my hair trigger temper, but yeah...guess it's finally getting me into real hot water if he’s going to demote me. Oh, I’d better explain about that. In ISS, members are divided by Rank, from 0 to 6. Rank 0 members are all trainees and never go out in the field, nor do anything more than receive training or act as assistants to fully instated members. Rank 1, where I’ll be going if I don’t watch it, are members who work in the base, and rarely if ever go into the field...something I’d hate to do cause I’d die of boredom. Rank 2, where me and Ginji are, are field agents, albeit lower leveled ones. We’re usually sent on more simple missions like that Exorcism, or sent to scout out areas since we’re officially rated as ‘low combatant’. Rank 3 is similar to Rank 2, only they’re considered ‘high combatants’ and are therefore ISS’ main fighting force. Above them is Rank 4, who are the special ops of ISS. They’re basically our equivalent of SWAT teams more or less. Next is Rank 5. Members in that Rank are the elite of the elite, with that being the rank all combatants aim for. And last, but certainly not least is Rank 6. That Rank is bestowed to the Director of ISS, and in this case, that’s Boss. Speaking of Rank, the nice guy earlier is my Sempai and one of my mentors when I was starting out, William Jackson. He’s a Rank 5 operative, and one of the strongest mystic swordsmen of this generation…

...Ah! I’m getting off topic again. Yeah, so as you probably heard, one of the reasons why I’m not getting demoted on the spot is thanks to Ginji. Before I got him for a partner...I went through partners faster than I go through shoes, as while I seem to be well liked enough off duty...I have a bit of a bad reputation due to my temper, which often led to my partners requesting a transfer, usually within a span of 2 months...if I was lucky and got a patient one. That all changed though about 6 months ago…

Flashback

It was...a rather boring day really. A new area of forests in the deeper parts of rural Greenland that was still uncharted had been recently found, and as always, ISS wanted to explore it immediately. Hence why me and the other Rank 2s were sent to scout the perimeter, and help the Rank 1s set up base camps.

“Mou! How long are they gonna have us do stuff like this?!” I grumbled as I trudged along. Walking next to me was a woman in her early twenties, her long black hair trailing down to her back. She was dressed in a nun’s habit, albeit colored a light blue rather than black, as well as lacking the head covering. This is Rose la Lumiere, a good friend, and one of my seniors. She’s one of the Rank 3 members who had come along with the scouting party ahead of the others who were preparing for the actual expedition.

“Now now, don’t be like that,” Rose smiled. “After all, we should take time and enjoy the peace while we can.”

“Yeah, I guess. Still...I wanted to have some action!” I groaned. In retrospect I probably should have been careful what I wished for. Cause as if on cue, an explosion was heard in the distance.

“...you were saying?” Rose deadpanned, to which I just shrugged in response, before pulling out my talismans and gun, and running towards the source, Rose contacting backup and following after me.

The two of us ran for a while, and it wasn’t long before we came upon the source of the explosion. And it made us do a double take. Robots. A small army of Robots that were shaped like some kind of four legged predators, looking like a sort of mix between lions and wolves was rampaging in the forest, tearing down trees and burning bushes...honestly looking like they were searching for something now that I think of it. “Hold it right there, tin cans!” I grinned, putting away my talismans. Onmyodo arts would be less effective here, so I opted to focus more on using my gun, and quickly changed the ammo from anti-spirit/supernatural rounds, to the more effective explosive rounds. The robots didn’t seem to notice me even as I shouted, but that only made it easier for me to aim and fire at 3 or 4 of them, and watch as a few of the nearby robots were caught in the ensuing explosions.

THAT got their attention, as the remaining robots immediately turned their attention towards me, and opened fire. Fortunately, even before I tried to dodge, a barrier of translucent white energy appeared, and blocked all the attacks. The source was none other than Rose, having raised her metal crucifix to help create a barrier from her spiritual powers. “You really need to stop running ahead all the time, Akari,” she sighed in annoyance. I could only laugh sheepishly since I HAD run ahead of her...again.

“No matter, let’s quickly clean up this issue,” Rose sighed, before a sword in its sheath appeared at her waist. Dropping the barrier, she ran forward, and in a flash, 3 of the robots had been cut in half at the waist, their metal bodies offering little protection against Rose’s rather unorthodox weapon: a blessed high frequency sword.

Not to be left out, I quickly joined in again, and between the two of us, we quickly made short work of the robots, so much so that it wasn’t long before we were standing in a veritable scrap yard. “So...what are robots doing in a forest?” I couldn’t help but ask.

“Your guess is as good as mine,” Rose nodded. “We’d better get back to base. It would be best if we let ISS sort out the details from here,” she said to which I nodded. Getting ambushed in a forest full of robots did NOT sound appealing at all. However, just as we were walking, I noticed a small slope by the side that seemed to lead to a river...and something at the river’s edge.

“Hey, hold on, Rose,” I said as I went to check, ignoring her calls for me to stay nearby. When I got to the bottom, I saw what, or rather who it was...and promptly blushed when I saw it was a man, about 2 years older than me...and I noticed he was naked save for the loin cloth on his waist. He was also soaking wet, meaning he had washed up from the river. Pushing aside any impure thoughts, I quickly pushed him over so that he was facing up, as he could be suffering from near drowning. Of course, doing so revealed his admittedly toned and well muscled body that had several tribal markings around his shoulders and chest…

Forcing down another blush, I realized just how badly he was injured, several wounds all over his body bleeding profusely. I also noticed he wasn’t breathing. “H-Hey! Hang in there!” I shouted frantically as I began pumping his chest, hoping to get the water out. By my side, Rose also came over, and using her healing magic, helped push the water that had gotten into his lungs out. However, as she worked, her eyes widened.

“My God!” she gasped, her tone telling me that he was hurt a LOT worse than he looked...and he already looked bad to begin with. Fortunately, our efforts bore fruit as the man coughed, expelling the water he’d breathed in. Once he stopped coughing, his eyes cracked open slightly, confirming that he was still alive. “T-.the others…” he murmured, his hand reaching up as though trying to force himself to stand...before the arm fell back to the ground.

“We need to get him help, quick! The most I can safely do right now is first aid at best!” Rose ordered, to which I quickly contacted backup while she went to work, healing what she safely could.

[hr]

A few hours later, we were back at headquarters, the entire scouting team having been ordered to withdraw while the expedition was now being carried out by a mixture of Rank 3 and Rank 4 members, especially the ones specializing the most in battle. At the same time, the man had been safely transferred to our base, and was undergoing emergency treatment.

“The expedition team’s already sent some data to us,” Boss stated as he placed a few papers on the desk. “So far we haven’t been able to identify where the robots came from, nor who made them. The design is like nothing we’ve ever seen...however, the engineering team has uncovered something...disturbing about the inner workings,” he gulped slightly. “I’ll leave it to you, Wrench,” he said, referring to a short green creature dressed in a mechanic outfit. He had rather cartoony looking eyes with a big red nose, and a pair of goggles on his head. This was Wrench, the head mechanic of ISS.

“Right...when we examined and opened the machines, what we found was that well...we found living flesh and blood inside, all of it mixed with machinery,” Wrench looked a little sick. “It honestly… looks like someone decided to take a living creature, and graft or insert machinery into it without bothering to replace the existing organs or anything’,” he explained, and at this point, I felt myself going a bit green, and a quick look told me many of the others felt the same way (we later learned some of the engineers emptied their stomachs upon seeing the inside of the ‘robots’). However, before I could think it further, Boss began talking again.

“As for the forest itself, the expedition went off without incident for the most part. However, what the machines were after, we do not know, as there were several areas throughout the forest that had been burnt to the ground, so we are under the assumption that whatever it was they were after, they probably already got it,” Boss finished before we were soon dismissed.

After that was over, I went over to the infirmary to check on the guy we found. When I got to the infirmary, I was expecting to see the guy probably still asleep or something, but instead, he was unbelievably, already up, though he had a sorta dazed look in his eyes.

To my surprise, he grunted and clutched his head as if in pain.

“H-hey, are you okay?” I reached out toward him to grab his shoulder.

When I touched his shoulder, confusion seemed to flash in his expression, before he took a good look at me. One look in his eyes was enough to show me the feelings running through him. I could tell he was confused….scared possibly. The first thing he asked was, “Who are you?”

I was slightly taken aback by the sudden question, but I quickly calmed down and answered. “Er...I’m Akari. Akari Hinomori. I...we, found you and brought you here. You were very badly injured when we found you.”

His eyes flew around the room, as if to scan everything he could, yet it did nothing to relieve his confusion. “W-what is this place?”

At this point I was half wondering if I should really be answering his questions...or WHY I was even answering them to begin with. However, in the end I decided to say something anyway. “This place is….how should I put this?” I sighed, as I realized I myself didn’t know how to explain it. So I did the best I could think of. I changed the subject. “That aside, who are you? I haven’t asked your name.”

That sent a jolt through him, and he clenched his head in pain again. “I-I don’t know.….I….can’t remember,” he groaned.

At this point I couldn’t help but give him a deadpan stare, one that he didn’t seem to notice at all. “Seriously?” I asked incredulously. A guy being found unconscious then waking up with no memories felt like something out of a cliche story plot, so much so I was half expecting this to be some weird dream. “You’re kidding, right?”

His face scrunched up a little as he tried to remember...only to be met with another stroke of pain that almost sent him reeling this time.

It was at this point I realized he wasn’t kidding, but since I wasn’t a medical officer, nor did I have any experience with this kind of thing, I quickly called for one of the nurses. Fortunately, the incident hadn’t done anything like aggravating his wounds or anything, though the nurse did recommend that he sleep, something she was pretty insistent on, and since she was a plant based alien, a Florian to be precise...he was soon put to sleep with a powder she breathed onto the young man.

“Will he be okay?” I couldn’t help but ask.

“Well, I must say, for a person who nearly bled to death...he’s very healthy,” the nurse sighed looking over his info. “So as long as he gets his rest, he should live.”

“Right,” I nodded, before a thought crossed my mind. He might know something about why the robots were in that forest, and for that matter, why HE was in it too...provided we can get him to remember. “I need to report this to Boss.”

Turns out Boss had a similar idea. However, due to the man’s condition, he had deemed it unsafe to force the issue at the moment. So it wasn’t long before I decided to hang out with Rose for the rest of the day. Unsurprisingly, she was one of the nurses taking care of the guy.

“So...any luck with his memories?” I idly asked as Rose was writing down a few notes.

“I’m afraid not. Whatever he went through, it seems to have given him a VERY severe case of amnesia,” she sighed.

“I see....ya know, we ought to call him something other than ‘that guy’ or ‘him’,” I commented, before taking a sip of the canned coffee I got out of the vending machine.

At this Rose chuckled. “Then why don’t you give him a name?”

When she said that, I did a spit take, which thankfully didn’t hit anyone. “Wait, what? You’re joking right?”

“Oh no, I mean, you found him, I think it's fair that you get to help him again by giving him something to identify himself with,” Rose chuckled, a small mischievous smile on her face.

I glared at her for a moment, before sighing. “Fine...I’ll think of something,” I sighed, before looking over to him and noticed the first thing about him that caught my eye. His hair was an almost exotic looking shade of silver, and that gave me a simple, yet effective answer. “Hey you,” I started.

“Hm?” he blinked in slight surprise, probably because of my attempt at an impassive tone.

“Yeah, it's about your name. We can’t keep calling you ‘him’ or ‘that guy’ forever,” I continued, much to his confusion. “So here’s the deal, until you get your memories back, we gotta call you something, so I’m giving you a name...at least until you remember. So until then...I’ll call you Ginji,” I said the last part rather forcefully.

He seemed to mull it over for a bit...before nodding, a small smile on his face. “Ginji, huh?” he mused. “...I like it, has a nice ring to it. Okay, so for now, I’m Ginji,” he grinned.

“Er...great. Glad you like it,” was all I could say, honestly surprised that my admittedly half assed attempt went over so well.

Time went on relatively normally after that. ISS devoted some time to research the robots, or ‘bioroids’ as the engineering team has started to call them. However, they didn’t find anything even seemingly remotely related to them. On the other hand, the latest addition to our infirmary was certainly shaking things up a little. Ever since he woke up, Ginji seemed to have made it his life’s work to give the infirmary staff additional workload to their schedule.

After he had woken up, he was told to stay in bed for at least a month to let his injuries heal. However, just a day later, I ended up finding him in the engineering bay when I was visiting a few friends there. Boy was I surprised to find him casually walking around the unfinished ships like some kid on a field trip.

I ended up having to chase him all over the hangar, a chase that ended when I managed to tag him with a binding talisman, before I had to pretty much drag him back to the infirmary, all the while acting like a good little kid who was keeping quiet to not cause trouble, something I found honestly a bit strange considering he looked older than me.

Next, I found him in the offices, poking around the cubicles, and even messing around with one of the unused computers as if he’d never seen a computer before. When the irritated staff finally found him and chased him out, the end result was a veritable storm of papers, kicked up by Ginji’s escape attempt which involved jumping on the tables to move from cubicle to cubicle, something that was only made worse when some of the more persistent Rank 1 operatives chased after him in the same way.

Once more, I had to drag him back into the infirmary again, after tagging him with another binding talisman...again. This was getting irritating even for me. I was getting jealous of Rose now for not having to deal with this, since she had the good fortune of NOT being assigned to take care of him.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was when I returned from one of my hangouts….I found him in my room….reading some of my favourite mangas on my bed, acting like he owned the place. Furthermore, when I asked him how and why he was here,he said something like ‘the room smelt like you’ or something like that. The fact that he had just barged into my room, went through my things, and had the cheek to imply I smell...the urge to kill was rising. It was only Will-sempai’s fortunate (for Ginji) timing that he happened to be passing by, which allowed him to keep me from blowing several holes in Ginji.

Some of the janitors quickly gave me a wide berth when I came stomping through the hall, dragging the annoyance of a patient by the scruff of the hospital clothes he had been given. Probably not necessary, but still a good idea. I was probably ready to bite a person’s head off that day, evident by the number of veins popping on my face.

Fortunately for my temper, the infirmary staffs’ sanity, and Ginji’s immediate health, his childish behaviour was curbed about a week later when he snuck his way into the gym/training area. Boy were the trainees surprised when they came in, and saw Ginji wailing away at one of the punching bags with what they described as a flurry of punches and kicks, before he punched right THROUGH the punching bag, splitting it in half. The day got even more interesting, when one of the more cocky trainees decided he wanted to test himself against the newcomer. It wasn’t long before they attracted a small crowd, before treating them to easily one of the most one sided fights they had ever seen. Now the trainee was no pushover, being a Pyromancer and all that. However, in the span of all of ten SECONDS, he was lying in a crumpled heap, groaning in pain as he lay in a pile of what used to be wooden benches. I honestly admit, I did a double take after that happened. What was even stranger was how...easily he got into the groove of fighting, so much so that it wasn’t long before Boss heard of this, and seeing talent, he offered Ginji a chance to join ISS...if he was interested.

Having nowhere else to go, and since ISS hadn’t been able to find any records that matched Ginji’s description, he agreed easily enough to the offer, and almost immediately took the ‘entrance test’ for ISS. He said and I quote, “Sure, it’ll be fun.” when he was told about the test, and when I heard about it, I honestly didn’t know what to say, and instead just face palmed in annoyance.

Unsurprisingly, as the testing went on, especially for the physical exams and the combat exams….he...to say he aced all of them would be an understatement. He did a LOT better than most of the other trainees...myself included...not that I’d ever admit it to his face. Of course, as expected, his talent was purely physical, since he did rather poorly for tests that required sharp and quick thinking, or ones that required more thought, such as the test where we were told to ‘shoot the dangerous things’, with them deliberately putting up images of ugly/hideous monsters...doing mundane things, with a couple of pictures of humans that looked normal, but had something VERY wrong, like the girl scout with the box labeled poisonous, or the businessman with a gun poking out of his suit case. As expected, he ended up punching a hole through a poor alien who was just blowing his nose. My conclusion? He’s a little lacking up there. Even an idiot could see that the alien was completely innocent…..mostly.

Still though, his overall grades were more than enough to get him accepted, and even promoted to Rank 2 immediately...not that it was a surprise, considering he managed to fight the Rank 3 operative who was in charge of the combat test to a near draw, only BARELY losing. That and the fact he’s not much in the brains department made him an obvious combatant...not to mention he’d probably drive whatever division he was assigned to if he was in Rank 1 to the point of insanity. So like any other good senior, I offered a polite applause on the day he was fully instated...had I know what was to come next, I might not have done so at all. It was about a month after he was instated, and I was once again without a partner.

Naturally, Boss had called me to his office, no doubt to assign me a new partner...again. However, to my surprise, Ginji was also there. When I saw him, I had a cold sinking feeling in my gut, and I looked at Boss with no small amount of terror...he was NOT about to do what I thought he was...right?

Sadly I probably should not have been tempting fate, as true enough, by the end of the day I now had Ginji of all people as my new partner...now the question that remained was who was gonna kill who first. As expected, the first few times were...hard to say the least. Ginji seemed to have the talent of stepping into every land mind that would trigger my temper, and a few times I had punched him right in the face (and got a slightly sore hand after I gave him a new bruise). Yet incredibly, he never asked to transfer, even seeming to have fun working with me despite how we seemed to get along like oil and water...or at least that’s how it felt on my end. Honestly, had it not been for the fact that I’ve gone through so many partners already, I’D have asked for a transfer...but with my current reputation, pigs would up and learn to fly without wings before he’d let me have a transfer.

Fortunately however, his childishness didn’t last. It seems whenever he’s in a fight, he’d suddenly shift from a childish adult to an admittedly accomplished fighter, something the doctors have attributed to muscle memory, meaning he seems to have had training prior to his memory loss. On top of that, it seems his child-like level of curiosity, especially after he lost his memory was a direct effect from the amnesia, so much so that after the first 2 months, he’d started to act a bit more mature, and responsible...though he still had moments when he’d act childishly, especially for things he didn’t know about...which was somehow a LOT of things, to the point I wondered if he was raised by animals or something...which might actually have been true, had it not been for the fact he didn’t ACT like one, nor did he have any trouble communicating with other humans. So long story short, he slowly but surely changed from a child in a man’s body, to a casual, slightly annoying, yet dependable partner. Which brings us back to the present, and how I’m in danger of being a desk jockey if I don’t watch my temper.
